The TTM and ProChange curriculum become an integral module for a new health and wellness coach training program
Customer Success Story
As behavior change and behavior change science have become requirements for health and wellness coach training programs, the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) has increasingly become a critical training focus. ProChange has become a key partner in curriculum development, for helping practitioners master the skills they need to become successful agents of change.
The Challenge
The National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) was established in 2012 to raise the bar for an industry that lacked standardized training requirements. When a robust board certification examination was established in 2016 in collaboration with the National Board of Medical Examiners to represent training, education, and assessment standards, behavior change and behavior change science were key requirements. Effective knowledge and use of the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) is listed as a required competency. Training in the TTM is therefore a critical component of NBHWC-approved programs. Other accreditation agencies, such as the UK Health Coaches Association, also highlight the need for effective training in the area of behavior change science theory and practice.
“This was really great & helped expand my understanding & the value of TTM. Such a wonderful thing to add to the toolbox!”
A leading functional medicine practitioner wanted to develop the most comprehensive and robust health coaching training program. Recognizing they needed expertise in the field of behavior change, they sought out ProChange, to develop behavior change modules of the training program, with a particular emphasis on the TTM, which was developed by ProChange’s founder, James O. Prochaska, Ph.D.
The Solution
“Wow, what an action-packed session you held for the students last week! You fit in so much rich information. We posted your incredibly helpful slides right away, as the students were clamoring for them. On behalf of our community, thank you so much for all the wisdom you provide around TTM. It’s an incredibly effective model that will deeply serve these new coaches for years to come. Think of the impact of that one 90-minute session on so many lives!”
ProChange actively engaged the client in a collaborative discovery process as they developed the larger, six-month long pre-practicum education and training to ensure that behavior change was one of the core competencies for students. Interactive strategies to infuse behavior change science into the comprehensive training course were identified. ProChange created a behavior change module that included 13 didactic training sessions to immerse students in the Transtheoretical Model, including how to promote the use of appropriate behavior change strategies and individualized goal setting with clients. These training sessions included audio and video components that were pre-recorded for presentation on the client’s training platform. Collateral materials, including homework and handouts were also included. The resulting training module was then deployed to seven cohorts encompassing over four years of training. ProChange behavior change scientists also delivered live training sessions within each cohort to drive dynamic and interactive learning experiences for all involved.
The Results
The resulting health coach training program has successfully trained about 1,200 coaches from around the world and has a 100% Pass Rate on the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching Certification Exam. Students consistently remark on how integral the behavior change training was to their overall education and report that it will be an invaluable tool in their toolbox.
“You have a great way to present this information in a can-do manner, with lots of positivity and flexibility.”
